about

Playing together since March 2020, the three musicians who make up backward futures are almost a cliché for Berlin: A Russian linguist, a Belgian chemist and an American photographer congregated to make music. They label their style as “late night limbo.“ But reflecting back upon one of the strangest years of the 21st century, maybe “late night lockdown limbo” would be more accurate?

Their debut EP “press enter” should in no way be reduced only to the motif of the pandemic. Still, the droning, repetitive melodies make the listener contemplate everything we have lived through since Covid first emerged in news headlines. Proximity has become a foreign concept since then, but from listening to “press enter,” we feel that the three did grow close to each other – through their music. They create a minimalist landscape through the use of drums, synthesizer and electric guitar, an environment where they all find their space.

Already present in their band name, their sounds bridge past and future, organic and synthetic, nature and machines. backward futures evoke images of piloting a sci-fi spaceship with illuminated control panels, as well as standing alone on the shore of a vast ocean, overcome by its grandness. As a completely instrumental EP, it resonates even more with the listener. With no lyrics to distract and more time to focus on thoughts and feelings, there is ample space to dwell on the emptiness in our minds that we face so often these days.
